Welcome to my worlds.

I write dark speculative short stories and flash fiction.
Now, I’m happy to announce a contemporary fantasy novel is coming soon.

The Last Summer Queen

A Novel

Book cover titled 'The Last Summer Queen' by S.Y. Coffelt, featuring a woman with long, curly hair, dressed in a patterned top with jewelry, standing next to a tree in a forest.

The first thing people ask when meeting another person
is “What do you do?” As if names are somehow less important than occupation. Witches know better, but
still, in my admittedly limited experience, that’s the most asked question.

What do I do? I kill things. Without potions or poisons, without hand signs or cute rhyming spells. I don’t even need blood. If any living being has a vulnerability, and let’s face it, life is a vulnerability, I can kill it.

Twice I’ve dispatched terminally ill witches. You want the list of what I can kill? Bottom line? If it’s alive, I can kill it.

Gran taught me not to kill. For me, it takes more effort to leave living things alive. Beginning as a toddler, I practiced meditation and relaxation, anger and stress management, positivity and intentionality. Fucking mindfulness. All to keep my Reaping powers in check.

And then I go and kill Gran. I didn’t mean to.
